On January 9th and 10th, the team competed in the Roto Grip Eagles Baker Challenge at Stardust Bowl in Addison, IL. Being a tier 2 tournament, Purdue’s men’s varsity and junior varsity teams as well as the women’s team competed in the tournament. Overall, 17 men’s varsity teams, 11 men’s junior varsity teams, 16 women’s varsity teams, and 5 women’s junior varsity teams participated during the weekend. The format of the tournament was 24 baker games on Saturday followed by 16 baker games on Sunday. Then, the top 8 varsity teams and top 4 junior varsity teams entered single-elimination bracket matchplay to determine an overall tournament winner for each division, in which the team that won the best three out of five moved on to the next round.
At the end of the 40 baker games, Purdue’s men’s varsity team qualified in fifth place with a total of 7183. The men’s JV1 team came in fourth, with a total of 6492 pins, and the JV2 team came in ninth with 6303 pins. Meanwhile, the women’s varsity team qualified in ninth with a total pinfall of 6467 pins.
In matchplay, the men’s varsity team first faced off against William Penn and came out victorious, beating them 3-0. They then challenged Mount Mercy and won 3-1 before moving on to the championship against McKendree. In a tense match, the Boilermakers won the first game, but then lost the next two. The team rallied back, however, and won the final two games, securing the match win with a final score of 3-2. Boilermaker Men were crowned champions of the Eagle Baker Challenge!
