This past weekend, April 5th and 6th, the Purdue Bowling Club competed in the Inaugural Boom Apparel Intercollegiate Club Championships. This tournament is a year end championships for club teams, or teams that are not affiliated with another college bowling division (NAIA, NCAA, NJCAA). All of these other divisions have their own championship event. Now every team has the opportunity for a National Championship in their own division.
This tournament provides a very unique format. The top 24 club teams at the end of the year based on final collegebowling.com Power Rankings qualify for this championship. Each team is then placed in one of four pools with six teams in each pool. On Saturday each team bowls the other 5 teams in their pool in four game baker matches with total pinfall winning each match. Each pool then has a position round match of four baker games. Sunday, the top two teams, based on match wins, in each pool automatically advance to a 16 team single elimination bracket final. In case of a tie, total pinfall wins. The bottom four teams in each pool then bowl a best of 5 game baker match for the final two spots (3vs6 and 4vs5).
Our pool consisted of Purdue, Notre Dame Ohio, Newman, Central Florida, Winona State and a bye. On Saturday we lost our first match against Central Florida and then proceeded to win our next four matches. We were then paired up against Newman University for position round and beat the to earn the top seed from our pool. We also had the second highest total pinfall for qualifying.
Sunday we enter the single elimination bracket against Ohio State. We lost our first match 3-1 and we are eliminated from the tournament. Ohio State then went on to win the tournament.
Unfortunately we were not able to perform quite as well as we would have liked at this tournament. However, we still have the Intercollegiate Team Championships in one week
